Cambria Hotel Washington DC Capitol Riverfront, developed by Donohoe Development and Koucar Management, has been named a 2023 Community Leadership Award recipient by the USGBC National Capital Region. Cambria Capitol Riverfront received the Resiliency Award, which amplifies projects that address building or community resilience through distinctive design, construction, or operations.

“Our project team prioritized resiliency and benefits to the community and occupants alike while thoughtfully designing Cambria Capitol Riverfront to achieve LEED v4 BD+C Gold certification,” said Steve Colangelo, Vice President of Donohoe Development. “We’re grateful to our design team – in particular our LEED consultant Sustainable Building Partners, BBGM, Built Environment Engineers, and Bohler – the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6D, and Donohoe Construction for helping us to achieve this exemplary green hotel.”

The 2023 USGBC NCR Community Leadership Award recipients represent some of the best projects in the D.C. region, an international leader in sustainable building. This year’s recipients were recognized at the 22nd annual A Midsummer Night’s Green celebration, which spotlights commitment and innovation in green building in the D.C. metro area. Projects nominated for a USGBC NCR award were judged on the categories within the LEED rating system: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Location & Linkages, Awareness & Education, and Innovation in Design. Cambria Capitol Riverfront is one of nine award recipients from the D.C. region who use green building and sustainable practices to improve quality of life for those around them.

Cambria Capitol Riverfront possesses notable sustainability strategies that benefit the project, community, and building occupants long-term: passive survivability, reduced embodied and operational carbon impact, and innovative stormwater management. Nearly 100% of rainwater runoff is retained for the 85th percentile storm event by utilizing permeable pavers, a green roof, and bioretention facilities, providing 2,767 cubic feet of stormwater storage. Energy-efficient systems and rooftop photovoltaic panels were incorporated to mitigate the operation carbon impact, and material optimizations were incorporated to reduce the embodied carbon impact; the result has been 2,070,097 kBtwu annual energy savings. The project successfully achieved the Passive Survivability and Back-up Power innovation credit by incorporating generators and the rooftop photovoltaic system to support critical building operations in case of a power outage. The Triple Bottom Line pilot credit was also successfully achieved, demonstrating the LEED certification’s economic, social, and financial benefits.
