A PIONEERING FORCE
Upon arriving in Washington, DC, John F. Donohoe, the son of Irish immigrants, opens a grocery and liquor store on the first floor of his parents’ home. By 1884, he establishes John F. Donohoe Real Estate, a small residential brokerage firm at 308 East Capitol Street NE.
A NEXT-GENERATION BUSINESS
John F. Donohoe Real Estate is renamed John F. Donohoe & Sons when the founder’s sons take over the business at the turn of the century and diversify the company into commercial real estate.
A NEW LEASE ON LIFE
John F. Donohoe & Sons relocates to a newly constructed building at 314 Pennsylvania Avenue SE in 1914, where the company expands its services to include property management, insurance, and lending.
BUILT TO SUSTAIN
While many Washington businesses fall victim to the economic downturn of the 1920’s and 1930’s, spurred by The Great Depression, Donohoe’s real estate, insurance, and lending services keep the company up and running.
THE LEGACY LIVES ON
The Donohoe family’s third generation takes the reins at John F. Donohoe & Sons in the 1940’s, driving forward the company’s vision for the next 40 years.
A HIGH-IMPACT EXPANSION
In 1955, the company substantially broadens its offerings, opening Donohoe Construction Company and Donohoe Development Company.
AT YOUR SERVICE
Identifying a growing need for the building engineers and maintenance professionals, the company opens Complete Building Services in 1963.
LEAVING A MARK
Donohoe establishes its headquarters at 2101 Wisconsin Avenue NW, on the ground floor of a building it developed, built, and managed. During this decade, Donohoe plans the development and construction of Georgetown Park and Chevy Chase Pavilion, two of the DC area’s most significant and impressive landmarks of their time.
A CENTURY OF SUCCESS
John F. Donohoe & Sons reorganizes as The Donohoe Companies, Inc. with four distinct divisions: Donohoe Construction Company, Donohoe Development Company, John F. Donohoe & Sons Real Estate, and Complete Building Services. The company celebrates 100 years in business in 1984, taking its place as the oldest family-owned full-service commercial real estate company in Washington.
A PROFESSIONAL EVOLUTION
John F. Donohoe & Sons Real Estate becomes Donohoe Real Estate Services, providing property management and leasing, investment sales, and facilities management to owners and investors in the District, Northern Virginia, and Maryland.
POISED FOR GROWTH
Donohoe Hospitality Services launches in 2005 and quickly expands to manage hotels under the Marriott, Hilton, and Intercontinental Hotels Group brands.
HERE TO STAY
The Donohoe Companies celebrates 125 years of business in 2009, under the leadership of fourth-generation family members.
A BOLD NEW LOOK
Donohoe unifies the company’s five divisions and 1,400+ employees under one brand in 2013. In 2016, the company relocates to new dual headquarters at 7101 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, Maryland, and 5151 Wisconsin Avenue, NW in Washington, DC.
TAKING OUR PLACE
Donohoe earns a “Centennial Award” in 2016, honoring 132 years of a successful family-owned business. The company is named a Washington Business Journal Top 20 “Best Place to Work” in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
