The proposed re-development of 5500 Wisconsin has achieved Sketch Plan approval from the Montgomery County Planning Board in a unanimous 5-0 decision today.  Led by Carr Companies and Donohoe Development, the project will feature up to 380 apartment units and 15,000 square feet of locally-focused restaurant, café, and retail space. The property was purchased earlier this year by Carr and Donohoe together with investors SpringHarbor Financial Group and Kruger Real Estate.

“Over the course of more than 17 public meetings, we’ve been really pleased to see so much community interest in bringing new energy and new investment to Friendship Heights. Our thanks to the people of Friendship Heights who have written or spoken up on behalf of change. We look forward to further engagement with neighbors and local organizations to continue crafting this project to fit into the fabric of the neighborhood,” said Jad Donohoe, Senior Vice President of Donohoe Development.

With Montgomery County’s Sketch Plan approval granted, the development team will now seek Site Plan approval in 2022. The 18-story project would provide a new shared street between Wisconsin Avenue and The Hills Plaza. The project would also provide the only Moderately Priced Dwelling Units offered in Friendship Heights Village; out of 3,144 units of housing in the Village of Friendship Heights, none are currently designated affordable.

“Friendship Heights is a highly educated and highly engaged community of people who care deeply about their neighborhood,” said Matt Buhts, Chief Financial Officer of Carr Companies. “The right kind of development here can be part of the momentum to improve Friendship Heights.”

5500 Wisconsin will be a part of the re-imagining of Friendship Heights. The team expects that this project – together with new investments by others throughout the neighborhood – will be instrumental in raising the profile of Friendship Heights as a desirable place to work, dine, shop and live.
